BSN Round 10: Piratas keep a leadership position

Host teams show no mercy winning all games. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Piratas as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Piratas edged 3rd ranked Capitanes in Quebradillas 88-85. Naturalized American forward Phillip Wheeler (204-2002) fired 24 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. American forward Jamil Wilson (201-1990, college: Marquette) chipped in 14 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Naturalized U.S. Virgin Islands point guard Walter Hodge (183-1986, college: Florida) produced 20 points for lost side. Capitanes' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Defending champion Capitanes keep the third place with five games lost. Capitanes will play next round against Indios trying to get back on the winning streak. Piratas will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Brujos in Guayama.
Top ranked Vaqueros (7-3) recorded its third loss in Santurce. Visitors were defeated by fourth ranked Cangrejeros (6-6) 95-89. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Vaqueros. Worth to mention a great performance of Mali power forward Cheick Diallo (206-1996, college: Kansas) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 31 points and 20 rebounds. JJ Barea contributed with 12 points and 8 assists for the winners. Cangrejeros' coach Carlos Calcano allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The former international Javier Mojica (189-1984, college: CCSU) replied with 36 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds (on 14-of-17 shooting from the field) for Vaqueros. Cangrejeros moved-up to third place. Vaqueros at the other side still keep top position with three games lost. Cangrejeros will play against Gigantes (#6) in Carolina in the next round. Vaqueros will play at home against the league's second-placed Mets (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Guayama between Brujos and Leones. Sixth ranked Brujos (3-7) got a very close home victory over much higher ranked Leones (7-4). Brujos managed to escape with a 2-point win 79-77 on Friday evening. Ben McCauley had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. At the losing side Jezreel De Jesus responded with 14 points and 5 assists. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Brujos maintains sixth position with 3-7 record. Loser Leones keep the second place with four games lost. Brujos will meet at home league's leader Piratas in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Leones will play against the league's leader Piratas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Rest of the games of round 10 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Mayaguez were defeated by San German in a road game 82-77. Bayamon beat Humacao at home 86-71. Fajardo lost to Mayaguez on the opponent's court 68-72. Guaynabo managed to outperform Ponce in a home game 115-97. Guayama was rolled over Arecibo on the road 106-67.



San German - Mayaguez 82-77

Everything could happen in San German at the game between two tied teams. Both fourth ranked Atleticos and 6th ranked Indios had identical 4-7 record. This time Atleticos used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Mayaguez 82-77 on Friday night. Atleticos made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. American forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (201-1995, college: Arizona) had a double-double by scoring 19 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import guard Nate Mason (188-1995, college: Minnesota) chipped in 13 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Five Atleticos players scored in double figures. At the losing side American point guard Dwight Buycks (191-1989, college: Marquette) responded with 20 points and 4 assists and the former international guard Jaysean Paige (188-1994, college: WVU) scored 17 points and 6 rebounds. Atleticos maintains fourth position with 5-7 record. Loser Indios dropped to the fifth place with eight games lost. Atleticos will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Indios will play against Capitanes (#3) in Arecibo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

A very close game took place in Guayama between Brujos and Leones. Sixth ranked Brujos (3-7) got a very close home victory over much higher ranked Leones (7-4). Brujos managed to escape with a 2-point win 79-77 on Friday evening. Brujos dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Leones' 28. American power forward Ben McCauley (206-1986, college: NC State) had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the former international Christopher Ortiz (203-1993, college: Kent St.) chipped in 24 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. Four Brujos players scored in double figures. At the losing side the former international guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-1991, agency: Interperformances) responded with 14 points and 5 assists and the former international Michael Rosario (190-1990, college: Florida) scored 14 points. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Brujos maintains sixth position with 3-7 record. Loser Leones keep the second place with four games lost. No shocking result in a game in Bayamon where first ranked Vaqueros (7-3) defeated 5th ranked Grises (4-4) 86-71 on Friday. Vaqueros dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Grises' 36. Vaqueros forced 19 Grises turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The former international center Ismael Romero (205-1991) had a double-double by scoring 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the former international guard Cliff Duran (193-1989) chipped in 16 points and 6 assists during the contest. At the losing side American guard Gabriel Belardo (188-1989, college: FIU) responded with 12 points and 4 assists and the former international guard Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz (186-1998, college: Liberty) scored 15 points. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Vaqueros have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 7-3 record. Loser Grises keep the fifth place with four games lost. Vaqueros will meet at home league's second-placed Mets in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Grises will play against Cariduros and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

At the losing side the former international guard Guillermo Diaz (188-1985, college: Miami, FL) responded with 28 points and international forward Emmanuel Andujar (197-1993, college: Manhattan) scored 20 points and 9 rebounds. Cariduros' coach tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Indios moved-up to fifth place. Cariduros lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Indios will meet higher ranked Capitanes (#3) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Cariduros will play against Grises in Humacao and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
